BETTY BEGINS

Reform This
By New York Mike

Many have made Jesse Ventura comparisons since I began running for the assembly I consider much of that complimentary, but I do want to share one major difference; aside from the obvious.

I have a friend named Sparky. I met her a few years ago when she came into SDHD (San Diego Harley Davidson) with a guy who wanted to buy .a Harley. They made several visits and we talked at length. I never saw the guy again but a few months later.

Sparky came riding up on a Custom yellow Harley with a Betty Boop design. Sparky had an affinity for Betty Boop. She even has a Betty Boop tattoo in a great place which she's not shy about showing off. She is fairly glamorous looking, extremely colorful, and always smiling. She loves to dress in wild outfits and has what you might call a decorators' flair.

Sparky explained that she was traveling in Idaho or someplace, met a biker who offered her a good deal on the Harley, so she bought it. She learned how to ride, got the custom paint job, and is having the time of her life. She often thanks me for being one of the driving forces behind her motorcycle lifestyle

In the last few years. Sparky has traversed America on her bike. I have run into her in Sturgis South Dakota, Los Angeles, and God knows where else. (which is the only thing we often about God, that is)

Sparky is born again, and a devout believer. Whenever she leaves, she always reminds me that she's praying for me. When she first brought up the subject, I took a step back. .Sparky never pushes the issue but she is very specific about many of the things that she prays for. She'll pop up every three or four months on her bright yellow motorcycle, wearing some outrageous outfit. There's two other things I know she brings as well: a great smile, and the heart of a true believer .In an age of so cynicism, anger, and low expectations. Sparky's upbeat presence is. always welcome. And so are her prayers.

I don't know exactly what Sparky or anyone else believes in, but I love that they do and that they have the passion to share it. Praying for others is unselfish, and a person without arrogance is a breath off fresh air.

When Jesse the Guv made his comment about religion, I wondered how I felt for a moment. Didn't even take a second until I thought about hoe much I appreciated that Sparky is out there praying for me. I may not be religious but I'm glad there are many who are, and I want them on my side. I'll take Sparky and her prayers over to Jesse and Donald and Ross and their hype. any time. That is, as long as they prey for me and don't preach to me. And I'll even pray back in Hebrew! Yeah, I don’t know whose governor can beat up who, but if Jesse wants to call King David's army weak minded or needy, he might want to look out for little guys with slingshots.

And a Colorful biker-chick with a Betty Boop personality on a yellow Harley, with beliefs that need no reform.

SPARKY!

Sunday afternoon at a biker bar...I could write for a month about it...then it happened..."Sparky" pulled up!

Life will never be the same after you meet someone like her, it can't be. A woman with a Harley, a smile and a persona that I never could never do justice to. After someone pointed her out to me well I had to have a chat. She is the queen of the road On her 5Oth birthday her life really began with A Betty Boop tattoo on her backside. She told me how she had to break through to a new life and boy has she ever!

She was wearing a 2-piece zebra print body suit with cream colored chaps (with fringe, of course), hot pink cowboy boots (with chains, of course ), a belt of silver cylinders with a bike lock, and when she's not wearing her custom art Betty Boop helmet she sports a purple straw cowboy hat complete with zebra bandana to finish her look.

She is known from the Bay area to Baja, her smile says it all-she is having fun! Her yellow Harley is legend with all it's custom artwork she is a class act having her St. John knits "customized" to reveal her tattoo! She has left no stone unturned When I asked her if she had a mission statement...she held out her hands and explained it visually. Her nails are polished red, white and blue with "sparkles", a large amber stone is for her daughter..." Amber", a ring spelling "Biker" and a Betty Boop bracelet bearing several custom illustrations of the cartoon character, and by itself on the other hand a "Hog" ring What a woman! She followed a dream and the lady knows how to accessorize! I gave her my card and she gave me her calling card a Betty Boop pin specifically to hang my glasses from. Does it get better than this?

Oh my God. ..I think I want a Harley.

Thanks, "Sparky" see ya on the road of life!

BOOP-BOOP-A-DOOP

Sparky' logs 160,000 miles on her Harley in three years,
with 'Miss Betty and the good Lord riding shotgun

By JESSICA JONES

Staff Writer Free Lance News

She rides in white High heels, purple fishnet stockings, a purple mesh skirt with a hole strategically placed on the waistline, a white, lace top and a zebra-striped helmet with Betty Boop painted on the back.

This biker is known as "Sparky" to everyone she meets even in her interior decorating business in the San Diego suburb of La Jolla. "I've done 160,000 miles in three years by myself, she said. "Well, I ride with three people Miss Betty, the good Lord and myself".

When she was 50 years old, Sparky got a Betty Boop tattoo on her right hip. At 52, she learned to ride. Now she's 57 and her :bike is adorned with décor featuring the cartoon vamp, of the 1930s. Sparky's become so well known that " The BB Boys " the owners of the Betty Boop copyright, sponsor her on her trips.

When she's on the road, Sparky still does her costuming and packs three suitcases on the back of the bike with various outfits; not all of which are Boopaphernalia.

To the guy bikers, it's not cool to have a wind-shield," Sparky said. "So , instead I have Betty's face. She doesn't always wear heels either. Though wearing heels while riding seems like it would be uncomfortable or difficult, Sparky said it isn't. "I'm used to it" she said lifting her foot to point out the tread on the soles. "It's comfortable".

Sparky said the guys encourage women to get out there and ride. They love to see women on bikes, she said. 'She also said Betty Boop is coming back. "She's on the edge of what's going on in real women's lives," Sparky said. Although she missed last year's Independence Rally, (Hollister California) Sparky said she was at the first one in 1997. The biggest change since then, she. said, is that the Incident at April's Laughlin River Run in Nevada has kept people home. "True bikers, nothing keeps them at home," she said. "You still have to get back out there It's a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time!"
